A history of tequila + some cocktails as part of our Online Spanish Immersion

As part of our online events at our Online Spanish Immersions, we had a tequila night! Led by Jorge Fitz, a designer, cook and culinary historian, tremendously knowledgeable about Mexican spirits, the event took us through a history of tequila: where it comes from and how it’s made, and at the end we made some delicious cocktails.

Together with other Fluenz Spanish learners, we learned how to distinguish different variants of tequila, learned a bit about what makes tequila special, what to look for in good tequila, and finally we created three different cocktails with different profiles of flavors and depth.

If you’re looking to impress your friends at your next gathering (hopefully soon!), take note of these recipes:

Sustainable Margarita

2 oz Blanco tequila

.5 oz lime juice

.5 oz lemon juice

.5 oz agave syrup or honey

Salt to rim glass

Save the rind of both the lime and lemon, and give them a rough chop…

Crafted Paloma

2 oz Blanco or Reposado tequila

1 oz lemon juice

1 oz agave syrup

2 oz grapefruit juice

Club soda to top

Salt to rim glass

Pink peppercorns (optional)

Grapefruit slice to garnish (optional)

Fresh basil twig (optional)

Aguacatona

60 ml / 2 parts Atos Plata

30 ml / 1 part fresh pineapple juice

15 ml / 1/2 part lemon juice

15 ml / 1/2 part agave syrup

1/4 of a ripe avocado, muddled

*Margaritas call for a shaker (or a jar with a screw-on lid). Palomas are stirred in a mixing glass (optional) or directly in your glass.

*Also: have a jalapeño handy or consider buying a spicy liquor (Ancho Reyes recommended) for a twist in your drinks
